Making new look old
The City of Duluth selected Artstone to furnish precast concrete for the Canal Park Entrance Tower, a replica of the turn-of-the-century clock tower and one of the most recognizable landmarks in Duluth. The clock tower’s facing required a simulated brownstone to enhance the continuity of Canal Park. Because local brownstone is not quarried anymore, a concrete stone needed to be cast to match the color and texture.
“Artstone was chosen for this project because they responded to our needs,” said David Schilling, the architect for the clock tower. “Artstone simply had the technology in its casting process to replicate the architecture in a cost effective way.”
Artstone’s approach is to work with the architect and designer to produce a project which has a unique look of its own.

Matching Existing Conditions
Artstone prides itself on our ability to match existing conditions. The picture to the right is North Dakota State University South Engineering Building ADA Addition. The building was originally constructed in 1873. Artstone replicated the existing Lake Superior chiseled face brownstone. Can you tell were the new meets the old construction?
